seeing things one way and another

Often enough I've been disappointed to see pole-slung phone and power lines marring photos I've framed in the viewfinder. But, as with so much of my experience, what's noise on one occasion can be music on another. I recall a museum show I saw once that paired an artist's painting with a photo of the same scene. One American of Winslow Homer's generation, I forget which, painted a New England port village with a powerline pole leftish off-center. The photo showed no such pole.
